This is the Kisa candle. It was designed by Thorunn Arnadottir in 2011 for her graduation show from the Royal College of Arts in London. She was inspired by the way we use candles, particularly “[one] day as I watched the chubby body of a jolly Santa Claus shaped candle slowly melt, deform, and perish into a sad pool of wax I wondered if I could elevate this common place ritual sacrifice into a true theatre of the macabre in wax.” With that in mind, she chose the cat, an animal who has always displayed a double nature. According to her, “Cats have always had a split personality. One minute purring contentedly the next hissing and temperamental. While they are cute and huggable they have a dark side associated with witchcraft and sorcery. Kisa was created to capture this duality. Kisa performs a slowly unfolding transformation from cute kitty to brooding skeleton.”
She teamed up with Dan Koval to launch the Kisa Candle in retail stores. They created a Kickstarter to launch their campaign and were overwhelmed by the response. They hope to add more products to their collection this year.
