One of the things I love most about this job is that I enjoy the opportunity to be utterly amazed and left breathless by the talent and innovation of others. To see things that make me whisper words of praise and summon new thoughts and perspectives is one of the reasons why I love to write and why I love art itself, even though I don’t always understand it.
The most recent example I can think of are the delightful and wonderful works of paper sculptor Polly Verity. Her interconnected and tessellated pieces of paper are folded sculptures that gives texture and depth to a normally smooth and two dimensional surface.
They often obey the same principle that guided some of the earlier works of M.C. Escher, and each bears an intricate and unique pattern that is utterly gaze-worthy. Making these wrinkle-free must have been quite the daunting task, and part of what makes these so appealing to me personally. I simply cannot wait to see what new patterns she will impress us with.
