Metamorphosis is an astounding miracle of nature. A creature is broken down into nothing more than genetic soup and is born anew in brilliant and alien form. It is a fascinating process, and has been explored by scientists as well as artists. There is Kafka’s famous novella “The Metamorphosis,” and the immensely popular – if grossly disgusting – David Cronenberg classic “The Fly.”
However Matthieu Robert-Ortis of Lyon, France has much softer and lighthearted view of metamorphosis, choosing instead to showcase the beautiful illusions that perspective can bring. His sculptures, made from carefully arranged wire, take on entirely new form when viewed from different angles. It’s a stunning reminder that all is not as it may seem, as well as informing us of how different a perspective can be.
