I am always so conflicted when it comes to gore and horror in art. On the one hand, I can see the dedication, detail, and talent in the pieces, and can sometimes even feel completely grossed out. However, there is a certain kind of atypical ‘beauty’ to such creations that I can’t help but stare in wonder and amazement sometimes, and Katherine Dey has hooked me.
Though a talented and artistic baker, Katherine is also a nurse in Rochester, New York where she lives with her husband and their family. Using marzipan and carefully applied paint, she transforms her cakes into truly creepy creations that would feel more at home in a haunted house or a horror film.
Katherine boasts quite the unsettling collection of creations, having made cakes that resembled a baby mummy, her husband’s head, a lamprey, a brain, and many more unappetizing representations. Thankfully the replicas are sweet and delicious, though you may feel just a tad disgusted at the thought of what they represent.
Nevertheless, there is talent and artistry here that I can’t help but be enraptured by. They look gross, and I can feel my appetite fading as I type. But I cannot look away and gasp my bewilderment and amazement at such detailed marvels of baking.
One part creepy, two parts cool
