The Paper Sculpture Legacy Of Irving Harper

(Feature image courtesy of Instagram.)

Irving Harper was an immensely talented American industrial designer whose paper sculptures are astounding. Sadly, Mr. Harper passed away on August 4, 2015 but his work and importance for the modernist style and design have been immortalized in a book by Skira Rizzoli.

Though Mr. Irving was more famous for his furniture and interior design, having produced such wonders as the Marshmallow Sofa for Herman Miller and the sunburst clocks for Howard Miller, he privately created wonderful paper sculptures that hide their delicate origins.

Many of his sculptures look more like wooden carvings that would not look out of place in West Africa, yet they are light and made from carefully arranged pieces of paper. The detail is stunning, and makes us miss him all the more.
