The Unraveling Of The Human Mind And Form In Ceramics

Korean ceramic sculptor Haejin Lee is currently based in Vancouver, Canada and focusing on functional tableware. But some of her earlier works are of special interest to us. Her unraveling sculptures involving the human body are a surreal and eerie exhibition.

The peeling away of the stony faces evoke a sense of the unraveling of one’s mind while maintaining an exterior composure. The superseding layers of eyes and mouths — ever calm and neutral — hide the nightmarish display we bear witness to. There is an inherent beauty to the form of the sculptures, but they are also enormously unsettling to look at in detail for a long period of time.

The pieces are a touch chaotic and scary in some ways, and serene and beautiful in others. It is an interesting mix that we hope to see more from Haejin Lee in the future. To see more of her sculptures and ceramic works of all kinds, please visit her website.
