Using Only Galvanized Wire, This Artist Creates Lifelike and Life Size Animal Sculptures

Kendra Haste is a UK artist, and a graduate of the Royal College of Art. She is best known for her life size animal sculptures. Using galvanized wire that is sculpted on a steer armature, Haste creates steadfast representations of wild animals. She says what she is most interested in is how a mundane medium, chicken wire, can be manipulated and transformed into suggesting “the sense of movement and life, of contour and volume, the contrasts of weight and lightness, or solidity and transparency – values that I find in my natural subjects.” She goes on to say, “What interests me most about studying animals is identifying the spirit and character of the individual creatures. I try to create a sense of the living, breathing subject in a static 3D form, attempting to convey the emotional essence without indulging in the sentimental or anthropomorphic.”

With that in mind, she created thirteen sculptures commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces, that are stationed around the Tower of London. They are slated to remain there until 2021. Haste is currently in the process of making a grizzly bear and a bison head for clients in Canada, and a standing stag for a UK-based client.
